    John Doyle Bishop necklace

I'd agree, the box and the necklace are not married.

Fabric Friday: The origin and characteristics of nylon

First the geeky: The invention of nylon is credited to the chemist Wallace Carothers, working at DuPont in the 1930s. It was the first successful synthetic fiber, rayon and acetate being plant-based manufactured fibers. This first nylon was polyamide 6,6—made from hexamethylenediamine and...

Silk scarf designer, county of origin?

What a wonderfully detailed print! You're correct in thinking that the lack of pressing on the hand-rolled hem is a good sign of careful treatment. However, I can't help with the designer. I have seen Nina Ricci trompe l'oeil printed scarves but they are signed and not very similar to this. In...

Can you help date this skirt please

It is a very sturdy fabric that brings to mind uniforms or some sort of utility. If the hem appears to be at the original length I can imagine this dating from the late 50s to early 60s, OR the mid 1940s. Not much help from me, sorry!

Fabric Friday: Rayon continued, plus acetate

I don't think you (we) should be able to tell the rayon made by cuprommonium process (bemberg) vs. viscose process visually or by thread-burn test, however viscose-process rayon being the most versatile and cost-effective, it is a good bet for the majority of rayon items from the time of its...

Fabric Friday: Rayon continued, plus acetate

Last week, responding to the subject of rayon, Marian asked what fabrics are made with the fiber. (Remember, rayon is a fiber, and a fiber is made into a fabric. Rayon alone is not the name of a fabric.) Rayon started out slowly (embroidery floss, trims that wouldn’t need to be washed...

Marian, that's a great question. I can put together the weaves that I know are used for rayon in a coming week.

Fabric Friday: The origin and characteristics of rayon/viscose

Anybody miss me last week? I was away at the beach and fabrics were not far from my mind because it was 70-something Fahrenheit one day (cotton!) and very gusty and 50-something the next (wool!). Two weeks ago we talked about the manufactured fiber timeline. As you may recall, rayon/viscose was...

Help Identifying Fabric Type of a 1970's Mollie Parnis Set

Parnis used good fabrics. I'm thinking maybe it's a silk and cotton blend. Does that seem possible? I have a silk and cotton blend dress in my shop. The fabric is slightly crisp, somewhat sheer, and luminous. https://www.etsy.com/listing/288822277/50s-pink-silk-and-cotton-full-skirt You might...

    I love berkertex! 60s or 70s?

To me this looks like very early 1970s, and yes, I agree it looks like linen. The other option in my mind would be butcher rayon or a blend, but it seems to be behaving like linen in the creases.

    Fabric Friday: Manufactured fibers timeline

There are some varying terminologies here, but I have gone with the modern consensus on the name manufactured fibers. Formerly known as man-made fiber, manufactured fiber is defined as “any fiber derived by a process of manufacture from any substance which, at any point in the manufacturing...
