You have probably already seen this but in case you haven't here is the history of the company http://www.fundinguniverse.com/company-histories/the-elder-beerman-stores-corp-history/
The firm incorporated in 1911 so your hat would be a little newer than 1800 but it could be from the early 20th...
I did find a large collection of Bachrach photography at the Harvard Art Museum and saw a few brides with no veil or flowers like this one http://www.harvardartmuseums.org/art/159937 so it may have been his style. Thank you all for the help.
Thank you all for your help. I thought the photo was from the 60s but the style didn't seem quite right. I researched Bachrach quite a bit and know he started experimenting with color in the 1950s. He also apparently started doing wedding photos right at that time. I suppose it could be a...
I just got what I believe is the night gown that goes with your piece. Same brand, same exact treatment. Mine has a Lord & Taylor tag as well as the Odette Barsa one. I will post a picture shortly.
This is where I got the trademark info http://www.trademarkia.com/wetherall-73001086.html . It is possible that the name was used commercially prior to that but this coat seemed newer to me. I had something similar in the 80s.
Here are some photos of the inside.
By the way, the lady whose mother it belonged to would have been in her 50s in the 70s and she said her mother wore it when she was very young when this woman was a child. I don't think it is newer than the 50s or 60s at the latest. I think they used this...
I got it from the daughter. She claimed that her mother wore it when she was younger and that she remembers it from her childhood. Maybe women were just that tiny. :)
It seems too preserved to be from the 40s but it's possible.
Hi Nicole,
I actually thought the same about it once being a dress but the woman said that she has always remembered it being just a top. I only have one picture of the inside now but I will take more. It has some sort of gauze looking lining and all the seams and finishes inside look very...
Hi all,
Hoping to get an opinion on when this top is from. The woman said it's from the 40s but I think it is later, maybe 50s or 60s. It zips in the back with a metal zipper.
Also, is there a name for this style of embroidery/ pleating/ lace combo? How would you describe it?
Lastly, the...
Thank you so much, Mary Jane. I had never heard that term before but after googling it, you are exactly right. It looks just like what's on the shirt.
Would this be a Nehru collar?
Hi all,
I am wondering if there is a name to describe this type of decoration and the overall style of the shirt. I am sure it's from the 80s but I am having a hard time describing the embellished black area. It's not really embroidery. It looks like thin rope entwined with metallic/ lame...
Thanks, Ruth. My sewing skills are at best rudimentary so I am not sure I can hand sew this without it being visible and ugly from the outside. Isn't there something I can use to re-glue it like it was done once? I have fabric glue but it never seems to work and it leaves awful wet looking stains.
You may be right. I just don't see how this dress would have been finished though because there is nothing to indicate that another seam was present further up the dress. I definitely see some nylon thread in addition to the regular one. So should I just fold the pink strip over and sew it in or...
I also wanted to mention that I did find a ILGWU label that may suggest late 60s. I think. I am not sure about the all blue labels, they all look identical to me. Post '55 and pre '74 but don't know how to identify them in that period. Here it is.
Here are some photos of the hem. I am pretty sure it was part of the dress as otherwise there was no other finish to the bottom. The strip was sewn and then looks to have been folded and glued. There are also two places where the strip is cut diagonally, I am not sure what that is all about. I...
Thank you all. Very helpful, as always! I will retake the pictures with a different belt and straight. It is such a fun dress, I would have kept it if it wasn't so big.
Thank you both. I will go with mid 60s. Nicole, you are probably right about the belt. I put it on since it looked baggy to me otherwise. I should probably show it unbelted. Any thoughts on the hem?
Also, speaking of the belt, do you think it is from the same era? It says Valentino and is black...
Hi all and Happy International Women's Day!
I acquired what I think is a late 60s or early 70s Vera dress but was looking for a second opinion from the pros. The label resource has very similar labels with the ladybug on the label but mine is the one that also says "all cotton, dripdry". Made...
Thank you, Nicole. Is there a historical period that this dress is trying to emulate? Victorian? The colors are definitely not but what about the cut? If I was in the market for such a dress, how would I search for it?
Hi all,
I think this dress is from the late 60s or possibly 70s but not entirely sure.
How would you describe the style?
The fabrics are really stiff both on the semi sheer floral overlay and the fabric underneath. No content or union labels. Just the Lorrie Deb brand label.
Thanks
Victoria
