I can see the design of the accessories is 1950s style but can't help thinking the font and type of embroidery used on the label looks much later (late 70s-80s) Maggie. Are there any other labels? inside the gloves perhaps.
thanks Nicole, as it's not crepe do you think I can hand wash it then? do you usually test if they are colourfast first? (that's my biggest worry with this sort of print!)
If I may muse through this with you.
I am new to burn testing, but I just didn't get what this fabric and it needs washing was so had to try it.
From the outside the fabric has a linen look to the weave, is 'hard' feeling (though that could also be because it's not been washed for a while!) when...
Hazel, if you read the forum rules we cannot help with any valuations here sorry. An item is only worth what someone will pay for it. Your best guide is Ebay solds. (not listed, or unsold, just sold prices :) )
It looks the same length to me as the one at the FIT museum, but I agree something is up with that hem. Can you get better closeups or different angles on it? I can't really tell much except that it doesn't look as tidy as I'd expect.
I would contact the FIT museum and ask if they cleaned...
Rn number is given as for Samax Dress Co. of New York (this would likely be who physically made and supplied the dress, rather than the brand label that it was sold under)

The first skirt set is a similar design to this dress I have from 1958 (yours being the non-maternity version!)
The second, from the type of fabric used, style of print and cut I would say was 1980s using an old zip. Old fashioned in style though.
I don't see why not. With fabric, I know others that would consider this now not deadstock. But with a dress I think it can only be an advantage to know that it can be washed and cleaned with Oxy safely!
Oooh never seen that label before, I would agree with late 70's disco from that metallic woven cotton fabric. It would be a great addition to the label resource.
Elly can you lay it out flat and take a photo please? also what size is it? I must say my first impression is 1970s, due the colours and style of print with those definite lines, my experience of 30s florals is that the prints are generally a bit more abstract/blurred.
It would also be good to...
It's called an engineered pattern. Yours is also a border print. The print looks like it is imitating a middle eastern woven or embroidered design.
Very 70s and just the thing I like to wear!
from a 1950's dress, pictured. I see lots of similarly constructed and beaded cocktail and formal evening wear by this label but absolutely no info whatsoever. Not to be confused with Roebuck, which is another brand from this period but has no connection that I know of.
This dress has *three*...
I'm even thinking 90s if it buttons all the way down. That and the straight drop waist are indicators for me.
Does it have care symbols as well on the label. Tumble Dryer present would make it post 1985.
I think early 60s, with the waist rising from the natural to the empire line. It's not a typical cut though so could be a touch earlier - late 1950s possibly. It's lovely!
1970s and yes snakeskin, you can tell by the scales with edges that lift. Real has a more papery feeling than faux. I am not sure about using leather conditioner on them - as that is designed for a smooth skin and I would have thought you will just end up with lots of cream around the scales...
37" pretty short, it's mid-thigh on me at 5'9", on someone shorter it might be above the knee. If it were for a petite person I'd expect a shorter bodice as well. What is the shoulder to (true) waist length please? (not the drop waist seam)
As there is a seam seperating the top from the skirt...
Do you think that fringe braid is original or added later though Jonathan?
I know my opinion differs from some in that I take the latest alteration to be the new age of the dress...
I agree the presence of the tumble dry symbol makes it later.
The CA number reveals it was made by Sandow Sportif Inc. (the issue date is incorrect as all entries were reset to 1997 when the existing system was computerized)
