What do you do with vintage clothes that are too damaged to wear, but too good to throw away? I don't mean couture or designer items that still have some collector value, just department store dresses from the 50's or 60's with bad stains or fades or other issues. I have some 40's dresses that...
When I purchased this hat, it was creased and flattened and described as a military style beret.
But when I poof out the creases, it looks more like a bubble hat:
This is what it looks like inside:
The label says "Adolfo II New York Paris"
The stamp says "Martelle Body made...
I'm looking for advice in cleaning this dress. It still has all of the tags but no care instructions. The label says 50% Trevira and 50% Rayon. The collar, trim, and cuffs are vinyl. The lining feels like Rayon.
Hand wash or dry clean? I'm sure my local dry cleaner doesn't have any...
I'm trying to describe the design on this wild 70's border print maxi, and words fail me.
It's got peacocks and scrolling ribbons....
But what kind of animal is this?
Here's a shot of the label:
Any ideas? I was guessing maybe camel or boar, but it doesn't quite look...
Dusty Springfield video - 1960\'s
Just for fun, I thought you might enjoy this vintage video of Dusty Springfield wearing a Paco Rabanne type vest, with background dancers togged in Roy Lichtenstein type graphics.
They don't make them like this anymore...
Greetings, wise and wonderful VFG people!
I would like your opinions as to the age of these sunglasses. The black pair have a separate reading lens built into the frame. Inside the temple is printed "6184 Japan Patent Pending."
The Stars and Stripes glasses have chains that loop...
Can you change the title and description of an item AFTER it's been sold?
I bought a pair of trays on Etsy, and now the title and description have changed so that I only get one of the items. I'm sure that it previously said that I get both for that price.
I just don't know exactly when...
Grandma\'s jewelry
I remember playing with this jewelry when I was a little girl. My mother told me that it had belonged to my late grandmother, but I had a hard time imagining the stern lady in the photographs wearing such showy stuff.
My grandmother was born in Russia around 1899, and...
My antique sewing machine finally died, and I'm looking to buy a new one. I kept the old one all these years for sentimental reasons (it was my mom's).
I'm excited at the prospect of finally being able to machine sew denim, knits, buttonholes and zippers!
Any recommendations? I...
I have dinner with my Aunt Alice every 2 weeks. (This is the same lady whose wedding photo I posted in another thread). She's 86 now, the oldest member of my family and the last survivor of her generation. She's still mentally sound and in pretty good health.
I love to hear her tell...
Don't panic, but...
The Conficker virus is supposed to hit tomorrow. I don't know how much we need to worry about it, but it's not a bad idea to update your anti-virus software, and back-up any files that you would be devastated to lose.
If you're on a Mac, you don't need to worry about...
I'm asking for your opinions about the most important designer for each decade from the 1940's to the 1980's. Not necessarily your favorites, I'd like to know which designers you think most influenced and represented the fashions of that decade.
1940's:
1950's:
1960's:
1970's...
I think it's probably home-made. It's lace and tulle over satin, a thin self-belt, with a metal side zipper. There are panels of stiff pleated tulle in front, and a shawl collar.
The bottom hem, arm holes, and bust are finished with bias tape. The intererior seams are unfinished.
Some...
I\'m a Happy Capper!
A Happy Capper collector, that is.
I adore hats, and I rarely venture into sunlight without one.
Several of my hats are labelled "Happy Cappers by The Field Company - Los Angeles Calif"
They're very sturdy, and are usually a generous size so they fit my 22 1/4"...
60\'s or 70\'s on this Butterfly sleeve dress?
It's a black poly knit with huge butterfly sleeves. The neckline is straight across the front, and dips down in back. No labels, just a sewn-in paper tag with size and lot numbers.
I have a vague memory of seeing some 60's rock icon wearing a...
It's this weekend - February 7 and 8, 2009

Anyone going to this?
I'm going to try and make it if I get my chores done in time.
\"Do\'s And Don\'ts Of Wearing Vintage\"...
...according to Glamour.com
I agree with most of the "Do's"
But I disagree with most of the "Don'ts".
Oh well.
Don\'t you just hate losing a button?
It wasn't a great button, but it'll be hard to match. So that means I'll have to replace all 8 buttons before I can wear this dress again. Which means it'll sit in my sewing pile for a very very very long time. :teeth:
I found these suede boots at the Rose Bowl Flea Market yesterday. I love the mod checkerboard pattern.
Side zipper with YKK tag
The sole says "Hush Puppies Born in 1958"
They remind me of some Peter Max boots that I had in the 1970's, but are these new-ish?
These chrome pieces were attached to a vintage (early 1970's?) dress that I bought about 15 years ago. It was an off-white knee-length sleeveless sheath. The points of the "V" attached to the neckline and the circles hung below.
I removed these pieces before taking the dress to the...
Proper skirt length for 40\'s & 50\'s suits?
I have some nice Lilli Ann and Handmacher suits that look very stylish and flattering except for the skirt lengths. They hang almost to my ankles, and I think it makes them look matronly.
I would like to shorten them to just below the knee, but...
Why are the buttons fading this suit?
It's a vintage rayon jacket (with matching skirt) and some sort of crackled plastic buttons. They look like lucite or celluloid.
The fading goes all the way through the material, but fortunately doesn't show when it's buttoned up.
Have you seen...
I saw some shoes I liked on a VFG member's site, but now I can't remember where they were, and I can't find them!
They looked kinda like these. They were pink, size 9, and had a lower heel. I think they were tied with a ribbon instead of a shoestring.
Perhaps they're already sold...
I picked up this Oleg Cassini jacket at the flea market today. It's beaded lace with a silk lining, satin edges, and hook-and-eye closures up the front and at the side vents. Three quarter sleeves. Would this have been part of a set?
I didn't see this label in the resource guide...
Real vs. Pirated \"Twiggy\" dress
I have a "Twiggy" label dress, and I'm considering buying another. Both have labels that look like the ones on the label resource here, but the resource also mentions that the market was flooded with "pirated copies". How can I tell the fake ones from the...
Ahoy Mateys! Tis a fine day to share me grog wit' worthy buccaneers such as yerselves - pirates who be answerin' to no blasted landlubbers. Let’s raise the Jolly Roger, an’ keelhaul the scurvy lily-livered sons of biscuit eaters!
This has been one of my favorite vintage outfits for everyday wear:
It's a 3-piece acrylic knit suit by Stage 7. It's in my favorite shade of green, sooooo comfortable, but still dressy enough for work or going out. I also love the 3/4 length sleeves.
Unfortunately, the...
While we\'re on the subject of shoes....
Can we date these Grace Walker shoes?
This is another pair that were labeled 1940's, but I'm beginning to think they're probably early 1950's.
The heels look similar to the top pair in this 1951 ad:
