A friend shared this photo of Louise Montague who in 1881 won $10,000 for being "the world's most beautiful woman." She was "blessed with "a charming blue eye"and "magnificent teeth."

Interested to learn more about her and the standards of beauty for that era I found THIS SITE with photos of beauties of the time.

Laura, I agree! Those are my favorite pics also.

Those are my fave too Alice. That second trick tops Olga Korbut's similar pose I think.

I didn't understand at first glance why they were labeled 'burlesque', until I realized how immodestly dressed they were, with the exposed legs in hoses and short dresses (or no dresses, just the jacket tops).

Wonderful pictures, thank you for posting this.

I showed this to my boyf and he commented that you never see these kind of figures shown as beauties in period films. Even if the film-makers get the costume details spot on, the bodies, and even the faces, are almost always cast as modern day ideals.

Very astute observation by your boyfriend!

The thing that I wonder is if the ideal 1880s beauty was curvy with meat on her bones, then why do dresses from that period seem to be so unbelievably tiny (by modern standards)?

(And thanks so much for the great link Amanda!)
