1900\'s Eyelet Dress?

Here's another dress that I need help dating! Early 1900's? Thank you! NO label or zipper, it came with a silk slilp, not the one under the dress as it wouldn't fit on my model. see other photos. NOt sure if it is original to the dress.

No, not early 1900's. Might be 30's.

Hmm a couple of things. It actually looks like the dress may have been dyed and that's not just because I see some darker areas on your pics. The slip is not made to go under that dress although it could be 30's or 40's.

Would you say Nicole that the fabric has been dyed? I've only come across white eyelet dresses from the 30's and 40's. I agree it could be early 40's although I see late thirties elements.

You're quite right on the era: the ones I've seen have all been '30s or '40s too, and the earlier ones tend to be white. I've seen '40s ones in black and also, once in an original red. Not in brown but it's hard to tell from the close up whether it's been dyed, it's a possibility - it's an easy way to deal with a nice white dress with marks.

Also, the later ones tend to be cotton whilst the '30s ones are rayon, I think? Or maybe a mix. What do others think about this? It affects how well it takes dye, too.

Now that I look at it again, it looks like there are diamond inserts under the arms: they were a '50s feature so now I'm wondering if it's more recent? Perhaps late '40s?

I'm not having a good day today - sorry. Operating on three hours sleep.

Thanks for taking the time to reply Nicole - I hope you are rested.

Yes, I see the gussets and whilst they were a feature in the 50's they were used in the 30's. The sleeve does look generic. What I would like to see is a close up of the pleated frill trim on the collar. What fabric is it? Are there any fastenings on the dress?

I'm now sure that this dress has been dyed.

This link may have been posted before but it's an excellent reference;

Thank you everyone! I'm glad this dress has sparked some discussion! The dress slips over the head, no zips, buttons, etc. It appears to be cotton and I can't tell if it is dyed, if it is, it was a good job, very even. Here is a closeup of the bodice. Hope this helps.

Best,
Sarah
