1907 early zipper ad

This is one of my favorite ads that I have run across in my magazine collection :)

The C-Curity placket fastener. One of several early forms of slide closures invented by Whitcomb Judson between 1890 until his death in 1909. Even though his closures did not work quite right and they would come undone, Judson is credited with being the inventor of the zipper. After his death the Automatic Hook and Eye/ Hookless Fastener Company (later Talon) improved his C-Curity fastener, and in 1913 introduced the modern zipper that we know and love.:headbang:

It's cool to think there might be an Edwardian gown out there with one of these. :spin:

Not very popular at all. A total bust. Clothing manufacturers did not want to use them. As far as home sewing, I am not sure what the availabilty was to the public, but I highly doubt the average woman would have used one. Besides it's odd look, the actual insertion of the dress placket would have been a new challenge. They were probably not ready for that yet. 1930s era, when the push for using the zipper in home clothing began, Talon zipper packaging had insane detailed instructions for inserting the fastener. At that time Talon even had employees travel the country visiting department stores to have demonstrations showing how to sew in the zippers and their various uses. Ladies had to learn how to use this new novelty :)

Mrs. Siddons!!
Studied her in college. great tragic actress of the 18th c. Seriously. I walked into a gallery at the Huntington Museum in Pasadena once, where they have a huge portrait of her in the place of honor and I called out - Mrs. Siddons! and my friends looked at me like I was nuts.

love the ad, would love to see one of those zippers close up to see the teeth.
