1920s-30s Egyptian revival brooch?

I am confused by this brooch. My boyfriend says it looks military. Any idea of how old it might be? It is Egyptian style with 2 sphinx, a elephant, it is on a fabric backing and it has a C-clasp.

It looks like it might be an upcycled piece -- where several charms were attached to the ribbon portion of an old medal. I think I see some adhesive peeping out in the next pic. It's very charming.

I found the sphinx stampings and they are not vintage, but I think the military ribbon part might be.
