I have seen them referred to as 'Manila' dresses, after their supposed origin of manufacture in the Philippines. They were very popular right around the end of the 20s and early 30s - I think yours is 1931-32ish because of the defined waist. I know of a similar dress that was bought on board a cruise ship in 1931ish (they even had shops on them in those days!)
Thanks for that info...Jonathan, I had actually never heard of them referred to as that before...I still have a couple hiding somewhere, one I used to wear.
I do see the similarity though with the embroidery and those shirts that are still being made there.
I can't remember where I read that they were called Manilla dresses - it was a long time ago. Although I do remember mentioning here before, but 8 years ago... I don't know if the archives goes back that far.
