Hey guys,

I was wondering if you could help me?
I am doing an A2 project and have choosen to make an 1920s inspired dress to sell on the high street.
I was wondering what you think of the vintage dress's being sold on the high street today? And do they really capture vintage styles from the specific eras?

Thanks for your help :)

Hi Maxine,

Do you mean "vintage dresses sold on the high street" or "vintage inspired modern dresses...."?

I'm assuming the latter and in my opinion, whether they capture the "vintage style from the specific era" is entirely up to the designer and what they're aiming to achieve.

Some like to copy completely the vintage style - in which case, they often having trouble doing so because many of the older fabrics are either no longer being made or very expensive - but many designers prefer to have more creative input, and "update" an older style for a modern clientele.

Contemporary fashion design is to a great degree about catering to trends and the current "style" so vintage in it's pure form often isn't suitable for their commercial needs - which is to sell for the greatest profit. It reflects the time it was made, and what people wanted from their clothes.
