Very recent win at auction was a beautiful black 1920s embroidered silk shawl which other than smelling musty is in perfect condition. It also has a lovely fringe which is in great condition and not tangled so I would like it to stay that way but how can I get rid of the musty smell.
I can't leave it outside to freshen up as we have overhanging trees and that means quite a few birds around

Have you tried hanging it in a bag of baking soda or coffee grounds or kitty litter?

Freeze it for at least a week in a vacuum pack bag. It will kill the bacteria causing the smell. Also airing outside (out of direct sunlight) will help.
