I know this question isn't exactly about fashion but I thought this website would be the best place to ask.
I am dressing as a 1920s flapper for a costume ball.I have the dress and accessories but at am a loss as what make-up to wear.
Any ideas?

This is a fantastic site to find out about their makeup...

http://www.freebeautytips.org/1920s-hair-makeup.html

and from fashion-era.com

During the era there was an increased use of make up and it was fashionable to perform the rites of make up in public. Instead of disappearing to the powder room women got out their engraved compact and applied lipstick and powder in sight of a whole restaurant or nightclub or tearoom. Ox blood lipstick was used lavishly, but rouge was still used sparingly. Today compacts from the 1920s are sought after by collectors.

Looks like you need to get a compact and lipstick and apply in public!

Good heavens! I did not know that at all.

Talk about a complete change in what is considered good taste. These days it's the height of tackiness to even apply lipstick outside of the powder room, let alone any other cosmetics. Let's not forget the double-whammy of tacky and STOOOPID regarding cosmetic application done while driving.

I hope they didn't brush their hair at the table, too. :o Although, a fabulous cloche would have eliminated that need for the evening, if worn.

It is great that your not only wearing the dress but also the make up style.
Powder was worn instead of foundation this was very pale compared to modern and put on a lot more heavily then today , I read they would use 1/4 of a pound in a year.
The cheeks were rouged with a small circle in a very bright red, lips were in a bee stung shape and eye brows very thin and black .

has a tutorial on there site .

I have a 20's powder compact and rouge pot on this page at the bottom,

Powder compact were small in those time as they had to fit into small purse. They wear used like status symbols also so the more decorated ones tend to be from the mid to late 20's .

Thanks for all your help and advice.

I went with the dark lips and rouged cheeks.....The dark eyebrows looked a bit too scary for me!!!!

Very cool...the Beseme site has some great PRACTICAL info on how to achieve the looks. And products I didn't know were still available....

When I was a kid, I was in awe of the older ladies on the trolley with white, thickly powdered faces, bright red lips and perfectly round spots of BRIGHT rouge on each cheek. Must have been the 20s makeup of their youth still worn in the 40s. They were impeccably suited, hatted and gloved, and almost invariably wore the whole foxes with the glittering glass eyes.....I was both horrified and fascinated.

Interesting you brought up the round red rouge cheeks, as a youngster I can remember seeing a few old ladies like that and scared me.

Not understanding make up then I sort of thought that it must have been because they were suffering from old age and could not longer put makeup on right,
thinking about it now and what you just said Maryalice it's obvious now to me that they had not moved with the fashions, strange how thing fall into place with time.
