Patricia Hobbs Hendry: San Clemente Beach Club once held Olympic trials
August 18, 2008|By PATRICIA HOBBS HENDRY
Aren't the Olympics wonderful? First came that opening ceremony that was beyond description and then those awe-inspiring swimming finals. I'm exhausted from emotion plus late nights.
In 1928, North Beach was the hot ticket venue, not only for San Clemente but for all of Southern California when the Olympic trials were held at the Beach Club pool. At that time, in addition to the trials, there was an exhibition swimming race between Duke Kahanemoka and Olympic record holder Johnny Weissmuller with Weissmuller winning.
Olympic tryouts at the pool here resulted in the formation of a San Clemente swimming team. Frank Holborrow, a famous coach at the time, trained the swimmers.
The Ole Hanson Beach Club, which does not look much different now than it did when it was built as part of Ole Hanson's planned community, was constructed in 1927. The building was dedicated on May 27, 1928.
The Beach Club was mentioned in the 1947 Chamber of Commerce directory as follows: "San Clemente's municipally owned fresh water plunge and beach club adjoins the municipally owned beach. Swim in the ocean and in fresh water, picnic on the beach at barbecue pits. Private clubs, schools and business organizations can rent the pool for use for their outings and use the beach for picnicking and surf bathing. Located in the amusement center adjacent to the Casino for dancing, fine foods, drinks, bowling and movies."
