1930s hat?

First question of the day is about this hat pattern.

I'm embarrassed to say I've always described it as a 1926 hat, because there was a sales slip in the pattern envelope, and it was dated 1926. I say I'm embarrassed because it is now clear to me that it is NOT a 1926 hat. Besides the fashion being wrong, the pattern illustration is wrong. I'm not sure why I never questioned the date before.

Sadly, I lack a 1930s fashion book, but I plan to correct that soon. I'm getting an early to mid 1930s feel to the hat - maybe 1933-1935? I'd appreciate any input.

I think you are right. The very early 30s hats still show a lot of cloche influence, often with an asymmetric line to the brim and not so far over the forehead. Then you see different sihouettes like these: hats that follow the line of the head with little or no brim such as 2, 5, & 6 or hats that have a wacky (for lack aof a better word), shape to the crown llike 4.

I just watched the original Thin Man movie (1934) for the millionth time, and the women's hats often show characteristics like these on your pattern.

BTW, this is one great movie for Christmastime, with the most wonderful, crazy party scene that side of Breakfast at Tiffany's! A MUST!

Thank you for all the details! I'm glad that I'm on the right track with the date. I will have to change my website ASAP.

Maggie, now that you mention it, I'll have to check out Thin Man *again*. It has been a while since I've watched the original movie. Most recently we watched one of the later ones (might have been the last) in the late '40s where Nick & Nora go on vacation to visit her parents. But I really love the fashions in the first one.
