I found this dress in an antique store for $10, and picked it up because I thought it was interesting, and I could tell from the fastenings that it was old. After doing some research, it seems it most closely resembles long gowns from the 1930s--all of which seem to be selling for quite a bit more than $10! So I suppose I just want to know if I'm right--is this from the 30s, and are these dresses rare, is that why they're priced from $60 on up? Or is it just the sheer amount of fabric?

details:
side closure
puff sleeves
slit in back bodice
tulle (or something similarly stiff) sewn into the hem so it keeps its shape
no tag

Beautiful dress! I think it's from the very early '40s, about '40-41.

The value reflects the age and rarity: many of these have been shortened during the years since. Bargain at $10!

Great find; it's lovely. And I agree with early 40s, perhaps very late 30s--but I'm leaning 40s.

If it's in good, wearable condition, it is a hard-to-find item, worth well more than $10! This age of dress isn't necessarily rare, but it's very hard to find them in really good condition--and that makes a difference in value. And though we don't give pricing valuations here, please do lots of homework before you list and price it..... (It seems the tendency on some sites is to either way under price or way over price these; $60 is not a lot for a dress like this in good condition; oth, $600 or $700 is--and you're likely to see both ends of this range--but it doesn't mean they're accurate!)

Thanks so much Anne! $60 seems to be the lowest pricing I've seen, though most are closer to $100-200 on etsy and other seller sites. I will certainly do my homework before mine goes up!!
