Hello!

Do you think this rayon cummerbund is late 1940s?

Still in it's original box. I couldn't find anyting on Martus Dresswear but did find info on the maker Welch Margetson London. They operated from 1865 to 1963 and mainly made men's shirts. The cummerbund is black & the photos show the lining.

So, do you think I'm correct with post war 40s? or is it later/earlier??? I'm getting a 40s feel.

Just a wild guess, but I wonder how many cummerbunds for formal wear were being made in London during the war? Not many I suspect. Not many men available to wear them -

It's almost impossible to date these by the style. Black rayon cummerbunds just don't change that much from the late 40s - 50s.

1950s is a safer guess than 1940s.

Thanks Hollis, I was initially thinking late 40s post war, as I know due to war effort the men went from 3 piece to 2 piece suits (I'm learning!) and certainly woudn't be buying cummerbunds but the rationing did go on after the war didn't it, it didn't just stop so I have to remember that. So early 50s sounds right and makes sense ;)

...oops, I didn't realise I had a reply...

My vintage fair was in Essex in England. What seemed to be hot was metallics! People were also still looking for that little black dress and the young ladies were into plaid (school girl look) as well as metallics.....

I had a fab day. Shame my camera didn't work, but my friend took a couple but only when we were packing up, but I'll post them if they're ok.

I have booked myself at Camden Fair in London in November, pitch was nearly 3 times the Essex one, but I thought I'd give it a go. Then back to Essex Fair in December....I'm loving it, though I definitely do have to relax, I was clucking around like a laying hen!

....hmmm, forgot that other question....what wasn't hot....50s New Look was still admired and clucked over, but no buyers, but 50s/60s Audrey Hepburn little black dress fine and similar tops. But yes, New Look not so in favour, more pre New Look or 1980s were hot.
