Hello!

Does anyone think that this necklace and clip on earrings set looks 1940s?? When did clip on earrings come on the scene???

Thank you!

Sarah

Those are tough to date, I see themn anywhere from the late 40s into the 60s. Usually the 40s ones have screw back clips, in my experience anyway....I'd think 50s to 60s on that set.

I always think of those rhinestone sets as classic jewellery to go with those tulle skirted prom dresses popular from the late 1940s to the early 1960s...

Clip earrings were first seen in the mid-1930's but the early findings were different from the ones used later. It's essential to show the backs of the earrings to date them more accurately.

I think your set is probably '50's but it could be late '40's. "Many" but not all necklaces in this type of "Prom" jewelry have "J" hooks and extensions so the wearer can adjust the necklace's length.

The design on the fold-over clasp makes this one look earlier - but you are very safe to date it to the '50's.

Thanks Linn and Jonathan for all that useful information. It was the fold over clasp design and the way it was a little art deco in style that made me wonder if older. I will post back of earrings when I'm back home. I have plenty of necklaces that I now know are def 50s or 60s but this one was a little different.

I do want to learn about vintage jewellery and I've ordered a book and Carrie has referred me to some good websites, so I hope not to bother the forum too many times once I've scoured through those references :)

It could never be a bother Sarah as people are here to help one another. :)

I'm with Linn -- 50's, and I would say late in the period.
