I made one of those my-knees-are-going-weak finds at my local thrift shop today. The color alone made me drool, and when I saw the underarm gussets I knew I must be onto something vintage...
It's a gorgeous sort of golden/mustardy yellow faille coat - or coat dress? It has a chocolate brown lining, and nice thread belt loops. It also seems to be missing some kind of fastening at the waist... At the neck it has a button that fastens with a corresponding thread loop. At the waist, there is a thread loop on the side that would go on the inside if one did the neck opening up as mentioned above. No other signs of any kind of fastening, especially not on the outer side at the waist... Seams are unfinished inside, just the lower half of the lining side seams have french seaming - just where it might show I guess. There's two deep inverted pleats in the top leading to the waist, both front and back. Kind of raglan/kimono sleeves with underarm gussets. Skirt is very wide and quite long - to me it all looks very "New Look"

Sorry for the bad pics, but it's already completely dark outside here and the lighting in my livingroom isn't that great...
Anyway, my questions are - what type of coat would this have been or with what would it have been worn? Something for the evening, or to go over a cocktail dress? It's so gorgeous, I can even see this being worn as a coat dress - could it have been that? And how would you think this could have fastened at the waist?
