1960s minidress?

I bought this online thinking it was original 1960s but now I've received it I'm not sure. Any clues anyone?

Cute dress! I agree that you've got a repro '60s rather than original '60s style. The clues are the modern looking buttons (although they're often replaced) but more that the arm openings are bound rather than faced. I would also expect a '60s original to have a smaller collar - see how it sits very widely on the shoulder line?

Some questions that might help:
  • is there any seam allowance or are the seams all overlocked/serged with no spare fabric.
  • how is the hem sewn?
  • what sort of fabric is it? It looks like a cotton polyester knit. I would expect an original to either be pure cotton or pure polyester.
  • what are the measurements? Original '60s tend to have no difference between bust-waist-hips or a slightly A line flaring towards the hips, so the waist will not be smaller than the bust. Modern versions tend to be more shaped, although keep in mind that shaping could be added after manufacturer, so a close inspection of the seams will help.
It's a cute dress regardless, and mod styles always look good.

Hi
Thanks, I feared that would be the case, it just doesn't seem right for sixties to me either.I'm not sure on the fabric as there's no label, but it's certainly not pure cotton. It's a very soft knit material, but I'm not sure whether it would be polyester or a polyester mix.
There's no seam allowance and all the seams are overlocked. The buttons seem to be enamel and metal (I wasn't sure what to make of that). The shape is straight, but the material is slightly stretchy.

All in all, I still love the dress and I can't complain, I didn't pay 1960s prices for it, but I would have much preferred it to be original! :)

These buttons with eyelets are a modern trend, they suddenly appeared on just about everything one year, I have two cardigans from 2007 & 2009 with the satin covered variety (just the eyelet holes, no outer edge), the plastic sort with an edge came later I remember correctly. We also had a lot of mod 60s style buttons come into the shop this year.

That style of dress was incredibly popular in the UK 94-98 - I had one very like it myself, so it could be 90s? I think mine was Jane Norman, not that it would help with the label cut out!

I used to used to pick up bargains from the 90s to wear with my 60s stuff, right up until recently when the price of 90s has shot up. Shows I'm getting old I guess!
