Hi all,
I'm looking for some help identifying this dress. I believe it's from the 1960's. It black vinyl and zips up the middle of the back of the dress with a metal zipper. There isn't a tag inside it, but the construction definitely looks professional. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Thank you,
Amanda

They did make solid vinyl dresses in 1965/66 when improvements to vinyl made it possible to have a more supple material - its when all those vinyl raincoats came out too. However, I agree with Nicole that it looks almost too shapely for a mid 60s dress - I would expect a more space-age looking shapeless shift style dress, but it could be mid 60s. Does it get hard when its cold? If so, that is the 1960s vinyl. The 90s PVC doesn't get hard when it's cold - a little less supple, but not stiff.

Thank you both so much for your help! I put it outside last night for a little while to see if it got hard when cold and it did get stiff. It's a fascinating dress, it's like a puzzle! Also the zipper brand is NYNCO. I got it from a really neat estate sale that almost nothing in the house was newer than 1970's that also had a "souper dress" that unfortunately I wasn't lucky enough to get.

Cardin used a lot of vinyl, but in moderation - as straps, trim, and medallions on his wool dresses, I don't think he did a completely vinyl dress.... maybe, but if he did it would have been more like a pinafore.
