I have enjoyed eBay since it started when auctions about to close were on it's splash page, I've marveled that it's like a treasure hunt, a place where vintage everything gets appraised just by watching the going prices. I've watched it evolve and where I find Amazon prices are more than comparative for new in stock items, the great value is for one of a kind scarce objects.
Having said all of that my question is a bit more mundane, in the early 80's I had just worked for many years trying not to file bankruptcy, looking back I had the feeling then that the only benefit was climbing out of debt 2 years earlier than I would have if I indeed just gave up and filed for bankruptcy. Of course it wasn't that simple and for the rest of my life I enjoyed the benefits.
The day I knew I was out of financial ruin I got an American Express card, back then it was more a declaration of fiscal health. I celebrated by going a bit nuts ... bought a motorcycle a leather jacket I still have (and may fit into) and a pair of Tony Lama boots. BTW back then the deal with American Express was that you had to pay off the balance in full each and every month, and I did.
Ok the motorcycle is a great fading memory the jacket like I said is still here and in fantastic shape. The boots? god only knows where they have gone to, they might be behind something that is behind something else, I'm just tired of looking for them- anyway they were/are deep tan like my jacket and not the best for everyday wear.
Now for the mundane I've found a pair on eBay my size in perfect condition, like many of the 80's things someone wore them a couple of times and put them away. They are black and beautiful ... the only issue is the finish which i just love- it's a flat black finish if that makes sense, the exact opposite of patent leather without being suede. The question: how does one care for them without making them "shiney" ... thanks it's been fun having coffee and visiting my happier times.
