Hello Everyone!
I am new to this forum and would love to get your help please! I am looking for any people who still have in their possession a dress purchased in1985. If not a dress then something similar like a blouse, jumpsuit or special coat. Many people own items from the 1980's but finding an orginal owner with a story to tell seems more difficult. The dress could be from a high street retailer or a designer and needs no special criteria other than being in one piece still!
I would really like to know if you can help me or if you know anyone who can. This is for a project I am researching that looks at the meaning behind the dress for different people. I am happy to fill you in further in later communication.
Thank you and I hope to hear soon!
Stephanie

Stephanie, I will see what I have. I know I have a lot of my personal wardrobe left from the 80s, and the mid 80s were a time of turmoil in my life. So if I have any special outfits left from that time, I'm sure there will be some sort of backstory to them.... Will see what I can find! Not sure I could precisely date anything to 1985 exactly, but I'll be able to identify some pieces, if I still have them, by what was going on in my life then.

I have photos of a lovely dress that would date to then, but I no longer have it. However, it was a most special dress for me, and if it would do for your project, I'm glad to share the pics and the story. You can e-mail me at [email protected]

Stephanie,

I have a well tailored, navy blue "power suit" I purchased and wore for business meetings at my first "good" job after getting a divorce. I purchased it in Fall of 1985, it is double breasted wool gabardine, has the classic mid 80's rounded shoulder pads, and is a trouser suit done in the 1940's style, with cuffed trousers. I had great success wearing that suit! It was a difficult time for me that year, and the suit helped me don a new image of strength and self assurance. Plus, it looked fabulous if I do say so!

Now I am thinking of changing the shoulders pads and wearing it again....hmmmm.

Let me know as I have it handy in my cedar closet and can tell you some great stories if you want.

Good luck with your project. It sounds intriguing.

Barbara

Anne, thank you very much! I have emailed you directly!

Barbara, the "power suit" sounds fantastic and very fitting for a new you at the time. I would love to know more about it, do you know where it was from? Do you have a contact email or somewhere i can write to you directly? Thank you so much!

And Pinky-A-GoGo - your t-shirt sounds awesome!!!

I have some 80s items from this period in my etsy shop. I can tell you about some of them as I often meet the original owners or, at least, get a story about the owner.

bycinbyhand is the name of the etsy shop.

Sounds like a fun project!

I have this brick red jersey dress by Rosemary Brantley on my website. I bought it new in 1985 or 86 when my hubby and I owned a dinner theatre. I had to dress up every night for the performance and so I bought a lot of nice things. I still have a rose pink silk skirt, cami & long jacket outfit and a turquoise silk skirt an top. They no longer fit me, but I couldn't seem to get rid of them.
The Brantley was such a fun dress to wear because it was soooo full and twirly.
Please familiarize yourself with the VFG board rules regarding the posting of links. They can be found above in the "forum rules" section. Thank you

I have my Mom\'s HS Reunion Dress

I'm not sure how I ended up with it, but I have my Mom's dress that she wore to her 20 year high school reunion. It would have been 1986-87 if that's not too late.
