They are both similar patterns - I assume you got them from the same source? The black damask silk looks like that Chinese import silk from the postwar era. The red print dress looks earlier to me but its hard to tell without handling... any labels? How do they close?

Thank you Jonathan. Yes, they are both from a collection I am helping with. The black damask just buttons up the front. The red pint dress has a metal zipper up the side of the dress. No labels. Thank you!

Im no expert but at first impression I see late, very late 40s on the black and the red midish 40s? perhaps more towards the early side....43-44?

but I just like guessing,, to test my skills..

waiting on others :-)

oh also,, something I just learned,.,, those look like sparrows on the black one,,, which means Navy,,, sparrows are a sign of how many miles a sailor has travelled at sea,,, during WWII our Navy was a BIG part so a lot of sparrow, anchor, and sailor dresses came out,,,

My hubby is in the Navy and we found a shirt at the exchange sporting sparrows,, researched it.,, neat to find out all the nautical innuendos..

Like the move Pirates of the Caribbean,,, Jack sparrow.... or black pearl (a naval tattoo for surviving a sinking ship) the obvious davie jones' locker, and the compass in the movie, A sailor tattooed with a compass never got lost at sea he always found his way home, there were a few more but I can't remember right now.

So I don't know if the sparrows apply to this dress but if so, good information to put in there since I personally look for sparrows on vintage :-) My hubby has earnes 3 or 4....
