20\'s or 30\'s and what would you call this?

Hoping someone can help date this dress/gown. I'm thinking 30's but the with the dropped waist and almost no natural waistline, very flat in front with no darts looks sort of 20's. Closes with side snaps.

Also, what do you think it was worn for? Wedding dress, maybe? Just trying to think of how to market it for wearing now.

Thanks Theresa

Hi Theresa,

Hmm...you are right about the no highly discernable waistline in the front, but the back looking so much more fitted/figure conscious confuses me!

Chris

It reminds me of something a bride's maid would wear.

You are right about it being confusing.
The first year that popped into by head was 80's.
It was the frill like skirt and the bow design in the back.

But I am not an expert.......

A lot of things in the 80s took their inspiration from the 20s and 40s, so I am not surprised that it would be your first thought. I remember all those "flapper revival dresses". (so a very good observation ... so Jamie, no bag head :) when people start to really get fluent about the older clothing they first notice how it is more or less similar to what they are already more familar with). And then part of it is where the little bit more of the detective work comes in - and some of it can be hard at first if you don't have the garment in your hands. Side buttons and snaps were used in dresses before side zippers. And when I see that (unless it is some type of playsuit or uniform and not a gown) i automatically think 30s as my first thought.

ANd I am DEFINITELY not an expert either!

I would think early to mid 30s when the waist was back in its natural position , but relaxed in fit and not emphasized. And most likely a 30s party( or bridesmaid) dress with that color and taffeta fabric.
