20s or older? Day dress or nightgown?

I just don't deal with enough early pieces to feel confident. I've had it in my head that this was a casual 20s day dress, simple shift style.

I'm a little embarassed to admit that it just occurred to me that it could just as easily (and perhaps more likely) be a nightgown.
:cul:
If it is a nightgown, does 20s still sound right?

I think you're right Maggie about it being a '20s nightgown, although it reminds me a little of these dresses, from a local collection, I think it's too simple and unstructured to be a dress.

I have an nightgown that is almost exactly the same as yours. I agree, 1920s and definitely a nightgown, though I wear mine as a dress with a slip underneath.

Nicole, I could never mistake your lovely dresses for nightwear, but thanks for posting the pic, because it clarifies for me why my initial call of "dress" wasn't feeling right. Thank you all for your input. And Laura, yes, I agree, it could be worn as a dress.
It seems we have 2 votes for 20s and one for 40s. It just seems too loose for 40s to me, Suzanne. Were yours this loose?

1920s nightgown, maybe even late 1910s. The cotton and embroidery work are typical as is the blue. Most 30s and 40s nighties follow the more defined line of general fashion. This very much follows the straight fashion line of the 20s.
