Thanks all!

Your dress has more of an early 50s look to me.

Not sure about the cape - it's very pretty. Is a "pop stud" aka a snap? The print used for the lining is very lingerie-ish circa 30s/40s. Probably home sewn as opposed to commercial with fabrics available to the seamstress. Or could the lining have been replaced at some point?

I loove the cape, the lining looks original, it has been hand stitched in the same fashion and cotton as the rest of the main body. The fastening is an old one of these http://image.made-in-china.com/2f0j00tevEoUHKOakb/Spring-Press-Stud-Button.jpg we call em pop or press studs in the UK, but it HASN'T been stitched similarly to the rest, it looks as though the cape didn't originally have a fastening. I thought about maybe replacing the stud (as it's been roughly attached anyway) with some velvet ribbon..
