Another item destined for the pattern/study category due to condition unfortunately. However it does have an amazing set of plastic? buttons I think could be used on a remake. I'm really looking for confirmation of age here. I don't know what the fur is but I'm not sure it's that important.

This is gorgeous! 30s was my gut feeling too. he blue wool lookes intact to me - or is it damaged too? In that case it may be salvagebale... someone who's exeperienced at sewing could replace the lining. I have very little experience with fur, but is that where the seams were where it split - so that may be repairable as well? Or ist there further damage to the fur?

If its the lining and fur that is damaged but the wool is fine, I wouldn't be snipping off the buttons just yet. The lining is an expensive but easy thing to fix, and the fur trims can be replaced (I think its baby calf?). These 30s coats are hard to find - most were hacked off during the early 1940s but I think yours is original, although it might have been shortened. I think its somewhere between 1933 and 1937 - I would have to handle it to be sure.

Thank you all for your responses.

Karin I know the wool looks fine in the pictures but unfortunately there is nothing intact - you can see the wool has some small holes already above the cuff in that picture but I keep finding bits of wool that have fallen off from I don't know where, I don't know if this is age or moths or something else! I have put it back in a bag as between the 3 materials I can't stop it malting.
I am experienced enough in sewing that I could replace the lining myself with my mother's help, she did a good job on a Harris Tweed Jacket for my father. I tried it on to see what size it is, approximately a UK 6/8 for comfort. (probably too small for me to wear reasonably, I am a 8/10 and I can do it up but the bottom flaps part and I don't think that's a good look!)
The fur is like paper and tears with movement. It would need replacing, particularly as the cuffs are rather small, once on the arms fitted me well, but I struggled to get my fist through!

Mary Jane I adore the colours, my favourite top used both the same shades. If this coat doesn't survive I am definitely thinking of remaking it. My mum said we could take it apart piece by piece and use it as a pattern.

Jonathan I believe the length is original as the lining has the same contrast piped edge all the way around. Thank you for the date.

Can anybody point me to some examples of similar age? I had no idea this would be so rare.

Beautiful coat - it looks like you could probably remove the fur, as the collar and cuffs seems to be intact beneath it. If it were mine, I would carefully remove them, and then freeze the coat to make sure there are no bugs in it. I hope it can be saved, it's a great colour. I've had a few coats from the '30s but they're not common.

Gosh I'm going to have to borrow a freezer then! we don't have room to fit a coat in ours! Would freezing damage a coat as fragile as this though?
