Hey everyone, just checking to see if I'm right on this one. My first guess was later 30s, but could it be early 40s too? Let me know what you think! I believe it is some sort of silk or rayon blend. Thanksssss!!

any labels? seam finishes? side zipper? metal?

is that the original hem, or has it been taken up? (can you tell??)

first glance looks like 70s, to me. but details will help, thanks!

There is no label, all of the seams appear to be straight-stitched- no serging or pinked seams, some of it is hand stitched, and the length looks like it could have been taken up. No zippers, snaps, or buttons...a pull-over dress with the waist tie belt. Here are some close-ups of the bodice underneath the lace... I'm working on getting some seam detail photos. Be back in a minute!

That very well could be. The belt is attached to the front lace overlay, but could have been added. As far as the length, I think it was shortened as I'm looking at it more. Also, what's throwing me off now, is that there's a natural waistline that looks as though it was machine-sewn, but it looks like it's been taken up with hand-stitching to produce an outer horizontal pleat hanging from the waistline. (You can kindof see this in the photo of the side snaps.

So, I think the conclusion is that it has been shortened....maybe in the waist as well as the bottom hem.

HMMMM....

yep, those inner construction photos help to date this older. thanks for adding them.

by the way, TheParaders, if you can size your photos to about 550 pixels wide, that seems to work best on this forum. thank you!

Thanks for explaining! However, the belt is sewn into the front lace overlay...

Someone really was out to update this dress. I wish it was in the original state :(

It does have an overall 70's style to it from afar, so I'm assuming it was done in the 1970's. It not a bad look, it's just not original. If your intention is to sell it, I would market it as a re-designed 30's cocktail dress. But be very open about the alterations.

agree w/amber on disclosure, that's very important. and you might want to carefully spot launder those underarms before listing, as well ~ try to get some of those dark stains out...but be careful so the water doesn't leach into the dress body...

I agree with you that it's been taken up at the waist - if I were you, I would gently unpick and see if it's all intact. I agree with the others, about it being a '30s dress. I've had a few dresses with lace like that, you're lucky, yours is in good condition.
