I seem to be getting a lot of research done in this area at the moment :D
Which name do you think is more appropriate to describe this? looking at patterns I think this certainly qualifies as a dressing gown, it's a very thin material so you would have to have worn something underneath.
At first I was unsure if it was 40's or 70's because all the shirred elastic is still very stretchy but the thread is the same throughout and it has the recognisable 40's shoulder pads. With those very pointed collar tips would you place it earlier or later? I don't know when this collar was popular, most examples I've seen have round ones and have you ever seen a 40's gown with a shirred waist? I haven't found one yet. It does make it very versatile however as it will fit several sizes.
Why did they not use a full length zip? This stops about a foot from the bottom.

I agree with '40s and it's lovely - in my experience, the zippers never go to the hem, always somewhere below the waist. I also find it hard to replace the zippers when they go, because they're metal and oh so long - I have one that took me three years to find the right zipper to replace the original, you can see it here.

I've also seen them with shirred waists, although it is unusual to find the elastic still strong. The pointy collar is very '40s too - when you find these with round collars they're generally from the 1950s.
