50s Cardigan or 50s Repro? Or something else?

Hey all- I haven't come upon a 50s cardigan before and though I suspect this may be one, the tags are throwing me off because they look a bit more modern. The photos pretty much show it all, it is an embroidered rust colored cardigan. It is lined with a satin material everywhere except for the sleeves. Let me know if there is any other info you need!

This is most definitely a newer piece, there were no care labels on clothing back in the 50s like the one shown here. The Made in France label on this appears to not be original to the sweater as it looks stitched on with a couple of handstitches as opposed to the other labels which have been machine stitched.

I would say that it is not 50s. Your instinct is right to the labels looking newer. A 50s cardi would probably have a number size like 32, 36, etc. The care symbols point it to being 1971 or later, but I would suspect its even later than that. it is hard to tell from it being on a hanger and from the photos at hand, but also, if the shoulder seamed is dropped it would point to it being more modern as well.

Great minds think alike. Looks like we submitted at the same time. Hard to tell if the made in france is affixed later or no because I have seen weird combos at boutiques. Or it could have come loose and stitched back up by the owner. hard to say. I would sell it as a modern sweater - you probably would be able to sell it for fall holidays

It is an XL- I couldn't decide if the shoulder seam was dropped or if my shoulders just wren't broad enough to fill it when I tried it on. Thanks for all the info!

Also- there is a small hole on the back through which I can see some white netting that looks like it was there to give it a bit of structure. This is certainly something I have seen on older items, things just don't seem to be that well made today!

There are very well made things out there. It is just that the stuff for average prices and mass consumption aren't made like they used to (though there were crappy things in all eras).

The white netting you see was placed on the back of sweaters in beaded, sequined and/or embroidered areas to add stability.

It is hard to date - if not for the care label I would say the sweater was made in the early 1990s. With the label I believe it is contemporary within the past 4-5 years.
