50s(?) cotton rain/trench coat - safe to wash?

The exterior is a kind of tightly-woven cotton, I believe; the lining is a taffeta, not sure of what material. There are no material or care labels whatsoever, just the label attached.

I'm wondering if this would be safe to gently machine-wash. I'm assuming the exterior isn't treated with anything to make it water-resistant, it's just the weave that makes it so?

Thanks in advance.

Personally, I would hand wash it, a nice gentle soak in the tub with a very mild detergent or shampoo, rinse, and dry- but no machine drying
I recently did this with a similar coat that was also water repellant with a similar lining, and it did great
