50s winter coat

I was pleased as punch, tickled pink, whatever metaphor you want to use, to find this winter coat. It's in nearly perfect condition other than being a bit faded and needing a couple of repairs to the hand-sewn hem. No stains, no holes, nothing. Someone apparently removed some buttoned straps (what are those called?) from the sleeves at one point.

The outer appears to be cotton and the lining nylon. I think the batting is probably cotton. It's surprisingly warm.

I feel it's a bit of an unusual garment as almost all the winter coats I see from this era are wool or fur. It's a bit large for me, but I'll be keeping it as there's no way I'll ever find anything like it again, plus I'm not sure anyone would pay for shipping for something this big.

I believe it's 50s but would welcome any other opinions.

Those colors, the design, and that linear quilting look 1980s to me but let's see what others say. I'm not the best at dating garments myself!

That's funny as the colours were part of what helped me to decide it was probably 50s rather than 40s, as it seems the 50s did a lot of blue and green I don't see anything about this that would indicate 80s to me, though I welcome correction! For example no shoulder pads, doesn't have that big wide 80s armscye, buttons rather than zipper, the buttons seem more 50s than 80s style, that zig-zaggy hand-stitched hem that I have only seen on 40s and 50s garments, and I'm pretty sure I've seen those big slanted pockets on 50s garments. I have in my favourites on Ebay a 50s (attributed) car coat with linear quilting.

It's also more faded than I would expect for an 80s garment; that can be seen in the bands where those sleeve strips (what are those called?) were removed, as well as under the cape (what is that also called?) at the upper back.

Of course I could be wrong, so other opinions welcome!

It's a 1980s ladies parka or anorak style jacket made by a home sewer, a very skilled one I would add. Going by the color combo, very popular in the mid 1980s, shape of the pockets and those toggle things at the end of the ties.

There was a vogue patten for something very very similar I was looking for but couldn't find on line. But I recall it when looking at this. NOT 50s.

It does appear to be home sewn, and very skillfully indeed.

Another learning experience!

Edit: I still like it, but will be slightly less worried about wearing it and possibly damaging it.

yep, agree it's 80s. but it does look super cozy and warm!

It really is! I was surprised as I tend to think anything but down is a bit useless if you want real warmth. Haven't tested it in way below zero though :D
