60\'s dress cleaning question

I have a super cute 60's mini dress (polyester) that has a few dirt marks that I would like to clean off. However, the last time I spot cleaned a polyester dress the stains spread and made big water rings/marks. :( Hideous.
Is there anyway to prevent those speading water marks?
Thanks!

Why not just wash the whole thing?

The prob with spot cleaning a vintage piece is that it has usually accumulated some degree of dust or dingy from the air, even if stored well. You end up making clean spots or dust-mud swirls...a bit like cleaning the hands on a kid fresh from the playground, the hands are clean, but the rest is now much dirtier looking.

I agree: I don't spot clean any more because of these issues, and also the risk of bleaching the colour out of that spot...so I generally soak the whole thing in an oxygen bleach. I've had little success in getting stains out of polyester though so won't buy it any more unless the condition is good. No help, sorry.

Nicole.

Thanks, that makes sense. I'm scared of ruining it though! I could try hand washing it, or maybe get it drycleaned? The only thing is that its poly with chiffon sleeves, and then it has rhinestones & beads on the neck area. Should I risk bringing it to the drycleaner? :puzzled:
