60s School Girl Dress?

Hi everyone. I bought this hand sewn dress today for $1. I just really liked it. Cute Peter Pan collar, nice plaid, small pleated front. Having no label has made dating it a bit difficult, but I was guessing 60s. I was reading the thread about Eli's dress and they seem similar. Pretty sure it qualifies as a "scooter dress."

1) So 60s? 50s?
2) "Shift"? A-Line? School girl? Scooter? Not sure what actually defines.

Thanks again.

Adam

Not 50's , that collar is a 60's/70's feature. I do think your dress is 1960s. Can you check the hem, has it been shortened at all? I can believe it was worn that short, but it just looks a little uneven. I read an article in my Marks & Spencer's book that said in the 60's adult women were buying children's plaid mini skirts (from the school wear section) to wear everyday for the shorter length!

I agree with a '60s dating, I'll go late '60s with that collar and think it is a day dress, not a school dress. The colours are too bright.

The front seams are wobbly, so I wonder if it's either a) badly sewn or b) taken in at the front to give more shape. I can see it worn with white knee high socks, it looks very girlish and there's no bust shaping so I'd say it was for a girl rather than woman.

It does appear to have been shortened. You can tell by looking at all the other stitching that it was done with a machine. However, the bottom hem is clearly done by hand. Here are a couple more pics. One with the bottom hem spread out and one of the stitching on the hem.

it USED to be that a scooter dress had shorts built in/underneath the skirt/skort. that was the point, that it could be worn on a scooter without any embarrassing free shows.

however, with the spamtastic keywords on etsy and ebay, any dress that is short is a scooter dress, now, apparently. :duh2:

Oh! I thought that any short dress which flared at the bottom so that you could wear shorts underneath was a "scooter" dress. Learned something new! So would you also call it a "Day Dress?"

imo, yes, it's a day dress, but it could also be called a school dress, that's practically exactly the sort of dress i wore to school when i was a kid, and that would have been late 60s, but more likely 70s, esp w/that longer, dog (or some say dog ear) collar.
