hi. I am new to the forum and like to introduce myself . My name is Mae Marie and I love vintage . I was given a fur coat to me by my mom in-law and it was given to her by her mom inlaw; she says it's sable? How can I tell? It's from Weiner's from Lawrence Massachusetts . Any advise

P.S. here are some pictures

Hi there, Mae Marie, :hiya: Very pretty. The collar looks like Alaskan sable which is really skunk that was intended to look and feel like sable, and the body looks like Hudson seal which is really dyed muskrat intended to look like and feel like seal.

It does not look like Hudson "seal" to me. But then, my definition of Hudson seal is a sheared fur, usually rabbit muskrat, or similar dyed and sheared to resemble seal. There may be different definitions of this type of fur. Your fur has a different look

Hi thank you for your thoughts on this matter. I was told by mom in-law it was sable a long long time ago but now I have it out she said mink lol. It feels feather like when stroke. Changes color in the light depending on how much light or darkness. The darker it gets the more silverish black comes out ... The more light the vibrant of red and brown shows as well as the vertical lines. I am guessing the way it was designed I am only guessing for I know nothing about fur; until last night lol
Did a lot of research and before I knew it was 2 a.m. lol..
I am getting it appraised. It is a 1950s fur it is in excellent condition. It was passed down to me from two other owners. My mom in-law and her mother in-law.

I also have muskrat fur and rabbit fur oooh and a hat I will send a picture of I believe it is muskrat. Not sure anymore ... . My head hurts thinking about it jk . I love doing research on vintage!! I have to read up on those creaters do more research. Anyone have an option on what it is ? I am so new to fur and I have had this locked away for years .

Thanks again for your thoughts and opinion. What do you think it is?

*Opinion not option.

Thank you for showing the back. I agree with Barbara after seeing the back the body does not look like muskrat. It has too much sheen, and actually looks more like mink from that view, but I cannot make the pelt definition out based on the photos shown. The body is not the same fur type as the collar, and is not sable, but again, when seeing the back I cannot make out the pelt definition of the body of the coat clearly enough to say with certainty what fur type it is.
The initials are a monogram that would have been added for the wearer.
If you spread the coat out open and flat in entirely so we can clearly see the definition of each of the pelts better it might help us more to help you. :)
