80s but looking earlier, or actually earlier?

Hi there

picked up this great tweed belted jacket. Based on the labels ( ‘loomed in England’), style and fabric I thought it might be pre 70s, but when I looked up ‘Stylemode Products’ in New Zealand the company seems to have existed only briefly in the mid 80s.

no idea what the material is, although feels quite heavy and thick…maybe a wool blend?

I vaguely recollect similar style jackets from 80s, so it could make sense - although it’s a bit retro for 80s and no shoulder pads. I’m getting a post war type vibe!

what do people think? Are you seeing an 80s tweed jacket or something earlier?

with thanks, Jane

Thanks Jonathan, that’s what I thought too when I looked at the jacket. Plus the whole ‘clunkiness’ of the fabric feels too old
For 80s.

The thing that threw me was the suggestion that ‘Stylemode Products’ wasn’t incorporated until 1983. But I guess it’s possible that the name was used before then by a different company or maybe they existed but weren’t incorporated?

That’s true - It’s close but perhaps not related!

Do people think it’s reasonable to assume 40s / 50s then?

Jonathon really is an expert on dating and I’d agree with him 100%
Edit: replied at the same time as another resident expert… looks like dating is closing in on 50’s

Nice jacket! Are they moulded plastic faux football buttons, or actual leather? Like Mary Jane asked, is there anything stamped on the belt?

I'm going out on a limb here but it does look an awful lot like the tweed country style suits my grandmother wore in the early 80s, very trad british style. Although she did wear a lot of the same stuff for many decades, and I can see 50s/60s too... which is probably no help!

My first impression was late 50s or early 1960s on this one, it would have had a matching skirt.
Is there any other information on the inside of the belt.
Wow - it does have something printed on the inside of the belt (photo attached) I can make out the words ‘super’ and ‘dry clean’ but a bit at a loss for the other symbols…

I completely know what you mean … it could be an 80s does 50s jacket - although I can’t imagine much was getting loomed in England in the 80s! photos of buttons below. They are actually really odd as they look plasticised but when I feel them (I actually gave them a slight bite!) they don’t feel like plastic and have some ‘give’

I think the symbol on the left is for ICI (imperial chemical industries) - you could maybe date by their logo changes, if you were feeling really bored! The fact I recognised it may put it in the 80s bracket, unless it was the same prior?

Hi there - I see what you mean about the ICI but I’ve never seen the logo in anything other than a circle? I think it’s been around pre 80s (see below) so even if it is the ICI logo it doesn’t necessarily help with dates!

arghhhhhhh!!!!

Haha, I just found the same thread! Yes that is unhelpful of them  They do mention in the same chat that Saatchi and Saatchi redesigned that logo using less ‘wavy’ lines c. late 1970s, but that’s probably not much to go on. Don’t you just wish every garment had an order number and date stamped in the lining!
