80s doing 20s maybe?

Hi all :)

I spotted this dress and thought it was pretty - I really don't have any idea of the age, but I definitely know it isn't 20's :) It's a poly satin/silk. Fairly lightweight. All the seams are hand-sewn it looks to me and the actual cut of the seam is a zig-zag.

Any ideas on this? Maybe even recent perhaps? No tags or anything unfortunately.

Thank you!

1984 was THE year of the 20s revival. In fact I know that because I have two dresses that were worn to 1984 weddings (two different weddings and not as bridesmaids) and they are both 1920s in style.

Pretty dress! be sure to use the word costume in your listing. We recently went to a roaring 20's party and I made my costume from an 80s sequined dress.

good idea, amishtaxi! I have a few 50's wedding dresses hanging around that are quite lovely but torn or have yellowing in the underarms, I might try and market them as costumes as well. (zombie bride anyone?) :o

There was also a twenties revival in 1993. I have a fabulous holiday market supplement to Womens Wear Daily for July 1993 featuring fashions that focus on the twenties. Some of the dresses are amazing. Especially those by Alberta Ferretti. They also showed beautiful 20s inspired cloche hats and jewelry.

The pleated hem of your dress makes me think early 90s or so, if so it's entirely possible the dress originally had shoulder pads. I did alterations for an upscale dress shop at that time and they were selling 20s look dresses with shoulder pads (I know...how strange). Damon was one of the labels that did this look often with beading similar to yours. It's hard to know for sure but no matter what the date... it is lovely.
