A date for Miss Sally Victor

It's kind of like a pillbox, but it is tiny! My guess is about 1960. Am I even in the ballpark??

And, do I even have it on the head correctly??

Thanks!

OMG, I did not know what the last pic was until I realized it was a fantastic closeup of the rhinestone adornment. Just checking in quickly tonight. Will look in my source books tomorrow.

Sally Victor was around for a LOOOOONG time. I think she started in the 30s, she was certainly around throughout the 1940s and 1950s and I think she was still around for most of the 60s. THere was a fashion for those teeny tiny pillboxes in the very early 60s. I think it was around 1963. Its a great hat! Perfect for those little black cocktail dresses of the period.

PS: You have it on the head correctly, its jus that it probably perched on top of a French roll or backcombed bun, so it would have sat higher

It is pretty!

Speaking of pairing it with a cocktail dress, I'm sorry I truly have to ask this... My mother taught me that 'tradition' holds that it's 'un-ladylike' for a woman to wear a hat after dusk (not that it's ever stopped me). Only in case this weren't some psychotic invention of hers, would it have been a hat to wear for afternoon-to-early-evening cocktails--or are there certain styles of hats that have been considered 'late evening' appropriate?

Interesting question, Steph. I'd like to hear from some of the hat-knowledgable people on that one. In vintage fashion magazines, I've noticed that a full-length eveing gown is rarely paired with a hat, short cocktail dresses, often paired. But when does it officially stop being "cocktail" and start being "evening?"

I have always understood that hats were inappropriate for formal evening wear, so you wouldn't wear a hat to a dinner, ball, etc. however, afternoon events that may extend into the evening or informal evening events were fine such as cocktails or theatre (outside of opening night galas). However, at those events hats should be kept small as you don't want to obscure the view of anyone behind you in a theatre.
