a learning curve! - selection of \'skin\' bags and purses - picture heavy!

tonight i got out a load of my 'skin' bags and purses with an aim to learn about crocodile, alligator and pressed leather.
from this forum and general internet searching ive learned about the dimples or dots on crocodile leather and the more uniform markings of alligator leather.
im looking mainly for any other tips or helpful markings etc to tell these skins apart and even if they are a 'skin' at all!!
was there a period of time when 'faux' leathers were more common?
a couple of these bags have what ive come to know as the general leather marking (the hide shape). does this mean they are pressed leather?
would a genuine crocodile or alligator purse have the croc sign somewhere inside?
is there anything i should be looking for with regards to the lining? would a genuine skin bag be lined with suede or similar rather than a synthetic material?
any help on this issue or dating would be appreciated no end. i know its difficult to tell from photographs and without handling sometimes.

PURSE 1 - one side zip inside. word 'ubrique' with hide leather sign. very structured 'thick' leather. top handle and longer strap.

PURSE 2 - by 'Dori'. Hide shape with 'LBD' inside. soft leather..

PURSE 3 - 'pierre cardin' logo.

PURSE 4 - thicker feel. 'W' logo to front.

PURSE 5 - no markings.

PURSE 6 - by 'duke'? very soft.

PURSE 7 -'pierre carin' logo. thicker material.

thank you so much.

thank you very much for your help!
i def agree with you on bag 5!
i wasnt sure if pierre cardin was faked much or not. i think if i was 'recreating' a bag id go for something more luxurious and make some cash! but they were certainly questionable to me too!
ive a couple bags somewhere thatre stamped with the crocodile/alligator i'll get soon and try and get a feel for this!
its really great to have another opinion. thank you!!

I agree with Marty about all being leather or vinyl.

Can you go somewhere that has genuine skin bags and feel them? Once you look and touch them, it's easier to see the differences with embossed leather and real skins. If you look at the edges of skins, you can often see the difference too, so I often look for where there is a little damage.

For example, with this snakeskin handbag you can see (especially if you click for a close up) the scaliness of the individual scales on the strap, but this would be really obvious if you felt it in your hand. Skins need to be nourished with regular care and vintage ones have often been neglected, so the resulting dryness can make them easier to spot.

Marty wasn't sure about your handbag number five but it's so shiny and sleek, I think it looks the most like embossed leather. Your Pierre Cardin number three may not be fake: PC really went overboard with the licensing in the mid to late '70s and you can find his name on many inferior products. I think your purse is late '70s.

Thank you Nicole!
That bag is wonderful, and i do see what you mean with regard to the strap.
Its had me look out this bag which does feel 'scaley' with individual scales being lifted a bit when viewed side on.

Ive also managed to find something marked with a crocodile/alligator in amongst my bits and pieces and it does have a different feel to it.

Also different to the others i posted previously as the suede feels more 'real'.
Youve both been a great help. Im going to try and source some more bits and pieces to get a better feel for this whole thing.
Thanks again!!
