Speaking of vintage clothes she says: You look at something, and it really makes your heart flutter. That's what this does for me.

Yes indeed, we get that. Read more HERE.

Such a bittersweet article, Amanda. You just know these two, Sandi and Dave have had so much fun in their treasure hunting together, but now so sad for Sandi that Dave will most likely go before her. She probably won't last long after he goes. I'll bet her collection is beautiful and must be so wonderful to have history on so many of the items that she has found over her many years of searching! Thanks for sharing.

I saw that, too, Carrie and had to wonder if that one year old was a little on the chubby side or what!!! All kidding aside, this past March when I was so fortunate enough to take a behind the scenes tour of some of the collections of Colonial Williamsburg there were some mighty small little corsets that probably would have fit a very young child. I remember thinking that it was bad enough for an adult, but terrible for a little one.

Upper class parents in the 1800's even into the early 1900's felt it was necessary to "train" children's posture and growth with undergarments. If you Google "History of corsets for children" you will find lots of references and information.

I don't think it's sad at all. I think it's beautiful. Beyond the obvious fabulousness of the collection, I mean. They are quite old, and they've had a long, happy life together. They did what they wanted to do and had fun doing it. And they are still in love. That's way more than many people ever get in this life. This is a happy story.

As for the kid's corsets, you'll note that they are not "tight-laced" and tend to have a straight shape. Most corsets throughout history were meant to maintain posture and create a smooth silhouette, not to cinch the waist (and rearrange the guts, LOL). That sort of corseting was relatively short-lived (popular, for example, in the late Victorian era). The rest of the time, they were far less constricting. I doubt they were any more uncomfortable than, say, high heeled shoes or a wool swimsuit : ). When my civil war corset arrives, I'll let you know : ).
