A Place to Call Home - BBC period drama series set in 1953 Australia

Australian melodrama set after World War II, following one woman as she returns home to start a new life after spending twenty years abroad.

I keep forgetting to post this - I caught the first episode by accident (it's being shown at 3pm in the afternoon, daily) and haven't really managed to catch it again but you can currently watch all episodes from series one and those aired from series two on BBC iplayer here. The first episode is expiring on Wednesday 3:45pm GMT though so you need to get in quick.

I read about that in an Australian magazine in May, and later just bought the DVD of the first season from Amazon. In the end, I had to get it because one of the main characters is played by an actor I had a crush on as a teen, way back when he was in the Flying Doctors (which I watched like mad back in the day that it was on German TV in the afternoons). Plus, of course, I wanted to look at the costumes and so on. I haven't started watching it yet, but it's on my "to be watched" pile that I am currently working on. Should finish watching Old School first though (now that's a great Aussie TV series - nothing much vintage about it though except for the two main characters :)).

Circa Vintage supplied quite a few costumes for "A Place to Call Home" including Anna's wedding gown (apologies for potential spoiler, it's featured in one of the last episodes).

It was was made by Channel 7 and was recently cancelled but Foxtel have taken it up and will make further seasons. It was a sad example of a show that rated well but in the "wrong" demographic - predominantly those over 50. All my friends were watching though, so not all older people. It's well done and very popular.

Gayle, you can see episodes here on the Channel 7 site.

I'll be looking out for them Nicole!

I hope it gets moved to a more sociable time, as previous hit series have (Mad Men in particular I can recall originally being shown at something like 11:30pm at night, until it caught on) so it gets the airing it deserves.
I particularly like that the main character is older and it does have a different feel to other dramas around this era.

Oh, that's cool, Nicole! I read on IMdB that it was axed - good to hear it will be carried on, there were a lot of comments on how this was a great TV show that shouldn't be stopped. The magazine article talked about the costumes, and the it mentions that in rural Australia in 1953 of course not everything would have been the latest fashion so they went for a mix of things, even back to late 40s looks - something that maybe not everybody would point out when talking about the costumes. I just watched another TV movie set in the 60s that has the lead character in too short skirts and dresses for what's supposed to be 1963 . If even I can see that...

yeah!! Thanks Nicole, brilliant ;)

How time flies... I've finally managed to pop that DVD in and start watching last night - and went on a binge watch! I am hooked and have ordered the next two series on DVD :hysterical:. It looks very well made overall and the story is addictive. Love all the old cars and the way they're using a lot of 50s music too!

They started showing it again from series 1 on BBC here from January in advance of the latest series, so you will be able to see the rest on iplayer Karin.
