A Souvenoir from my trip (no, not like Lei\'s Souvenoirs)

My souvenoir from my trip

Nope, sorry, I am not like Lei who brings antique corsets and printed leather shoes home from vacation so sorry for the let down...so not sure if this belongs on the rag BRAG or the rag BAG ha ha

I went to my parent's for the holidays and found my prom dress, and decided to bring it back with me before it got damaged in some way. Not selling it....its a "keep til its older." It needs to marinate for a long time.

I was not going to my senior prom but was somewhat convinced by folks "oh, just go, you will regret it in 10 years." It was no big deal. I went by myself and was home and in bed by 11:00 pm. big deal. But i needed a dress, and at the last minute grabbed the second thing i tried on at the local dress shop in town. Had to have it altered anyways, but it was altered in 2 days and i didn't have to go to the prom in jeans.

It has all the classic hallmarks of the 80s/90s cusp

If this were a few years earlier, it would have been teal or peach. If it were a few years later, it would not have the bow and the drop waist.

The bodice is covered in large sequinced roses. I wore very rose leaning red lipstick to compliment the dress. The skirt is assymetrical, but instead of left to right like some 80s tea length numbers, it is front to back, so the front or the skirt hit me at about the knee or an inch below and the back or the skirt was ankle length. I am just explaining as i am not sure how the black shows up on minitors. This was spring 1992. In fact, I think i was the only one in black and looked way more sophisticated and grown up than most everyone else (not a stretch, as i graduated with 35 other people and there was just us, the junior class and the dates), but that could also be our age. There was one other girl there in a black dress. She was sort of the one punk-ish girl in our class but we were it. Peach and teal were out by then, but i remember most of the colors being lighter, but there were also midnight blues and jewel tones too. That cranberry/hunter green combo wasn't in quite yet.

I took this photo last night so it was dark, but i think you have the idea. one thing though, there is a union label but printed in black and white. when did the union labels disappear?

i had spaghetti straps made for it as i was paranoid that the dress would fall off, as i never wore strapless before.

BTW, you can hate me now, but after much discipline, I got back in shape, and I tried the dress on and it Fits!! i thought that was pretty cool.

Cool dress, it brings back memories of the 90's :)
I graduated in 1993 (I was supposed to graduate in 1992 but I got held back a year cause I was bad at math- still am!). I never went to the prom but instead went to La Ronde (the amusement park in Montreal) with two of my friends on prom night so I never got to get a fancy dress.
If I had gone, I would have chosen pretty much the same dress as you Chris! :)

An amusement park would have been cooler. but it was at a mansion and i wanted to see what it looked like inside.

There is another dress...i wore it in a play a few years earlier that was blue and has the drop waist and the bow (much larger floppy bow) but was pretty short and had a ruched bodice. I couldn't find that one. Someone had one that was very reminiscent of it that sold except the color was different.

well, when "retro 90s" comes into fashion in a big way i will have a dress to wear to an event. :) My husband would be horrified if I did, but of course I reminded him of the gray shoes and the light blue tux he wore in high school.

Chris, I think this can do retro 80s (late) as easily as 90s. There was quite a bit of crossover between decades.

And okay - I hate you! :D
