A Trendy Look that I Don\'t Get

OK. As someone who still isn't crazy about seeing womens' bra straps as part of a fashion statement, the most recent cover of Teen Vogue has me scratching my head. There's a big hole in the striped under shirt.

Hayden Panettiere is wearing what appears to be a nicely draped white dress with a "distressed" t-shirt underneath. The description is: "Hayden wears a Jill Stuart dress. Y's distressed top, about $410."

So what my aged brain is trying to figure out .... Does this dress come with the t-shirt with the holes? Is the wrecked t-shirt $410 by itself? Also, is that dress strapless? (Her hair is covering the other side.) Am I the only one perplexed?

I didn't get Ugg boots so I was out of it years ago... but I have to say this one is particularly peculiar. I guess the theory is that if you want to wear a strapless evening or prom dress in daylight then throw a T-shirt on -- and if if looks like its your old painting T-shirt that you found on the floor of the bedroom all the better. But $410.00???? Surely that's the price of the strapless gown, not the distressed T-shirt!

You know, if someone on Project Runway did this look they would be kicked off the show! Nina wouldn't be amused!!!!!!

LOL Jonathan! My DH hates Ugg boots, too.
But -- having grown up in Laguna Beach, I actually have a fondness for them. Even if I've never owned a pair.
I always wanted some because it was always so COLD in the mornings in Laguna & I imagine they're like big warm slipper-boots!

No, that certainly doesn't work.

A case of "The Emperor's New Clothes?" A silly dilemma that keeps happening in the 'Devil Wears Prada' world. Young teen wearing a dress which should emphasise a great cleavage and shape that should say sexy in capitals.

Ooops did someone mention Miley Cyrus? They probably couldn't get away with it.

Result? Bad styling, unhappy designer - that's really how the dress was intended to be worn (?), disappointed and probably confused model.

I do *sort of* get it as a punk-ish irony. I remember in the 70s when I would wear a frilly blouse and jeans--my mother couldn't stand it at all! Gaultier put together some wildly ironic looks in the 80s.

The things I really don't get are the sunny young girl in this outfit (I guess we are so post-punk that even the mainstream dressers are ok in this type of get up?) and--especially--the prices. It looks like the type of outfit that should have been put together by a creative type out of thrift store purchases and/or one's mom's closet...for $4.10!

DD, who is 17yo, spent yesterday evening making an outfit to wear for a high school drama awards program. The theme this year is "Real World", referring to the movie The Matrix. Thye're talking not the sleek black leather & rubber outfits with the cool sunglasses that their avatars wear in the matrix but the very worn and torn sweaters etc worn by the rebels in their ships and in Zion. Sort of a vegan Mad Max. She deconstructed three old sweaters to make a wrap dress, with all the original facings removed and with artfully added holes and shreds. Had to be drab earthtones, nothing bright, nothing that looked synthetic.

Seems like an extension of what we're seeing here?

Maggie, I, too, remember the days of frilly blouses and ratty jeans, or long flouncy skirt with work boots--or any of a host of rather bizarre hippie, then, later, punk, looks! But I gotta say this I don't get at all.... Showing my advanced age, I guess!

I think this is the actual dress. ?? It's in the Jill Stuart spring fashion show. I don't know why I have been letting this bother me - guess because it's on the cover. Or ... my age ... I had a feeling her hair was strategically covering one shoulder strap. Sigh.

Could it be an updated SATC look?.....I remember SJP always and perpetually showing bra straps or a bra showing through sheer layers....

Im 18 so im kind of the age teen vogue is aiming for....i love this look though i wouldnt be brave enough for it myself...
i love the fact that you could take something so precious like a prom dress and mix it up with something like a ratty tshirt...dirty mixed with pretty= v v v cool!!!!

i think this way of stylin helps vintage too.... I love to wear my vintage silk pussybow bluse with scruffy jeans--- it makes something dresyy casual which means you can always enjoy your fave pieces--- or else they gather dust in your room waiting for that 'special' occasion!!!!! i have to admit that thats one of my problems!!!!! :D
boots-
oh and just have to say...i dont like Uggs either...but love the new 'it' boots- Minnetonka boots....check their site out... http://www.minnetonka.co.uk/moccasins_shop_all.php?gclid=CJS-96e0zJMCFQ88QwodzwI2jA ....
i have a high street knock off pair!!!!

AHA!!!!!
I found out where this look came from.
Yes, I went to see the matinee of Sex in the City this afternoon and there were several outfits where Carrie wears a T-shirt or sweatshirt under something feminine, like a 1920s slip to make it wearable for daytime or wintertime. The other trend was for coloured satin brocaded or embroidered cocktail coats to be worn over street clothes -- a look that really didn't work....

I can't say I loved the movie -- I didn't hate it, but it wasn't very clever, more like a couple of episodes strung together and not even some of the better episodes. The clothing took centre stage in many of the scenes including the UGLIEST LV bag in the world! Charlotte looked downright frumpy at times, Carrie was dressing WAY beyond her budget (I know what writers make...) Samantha was too boutiquey I thought -- not as slick as usual but that might have been because they were trying to make her more 'Californian'. At any rate, the movie is worth seeing but I might recommend you wait until DVD, unless you want to see the fashion trends they infused into the film to see where some of the trends will come from next fall, including, I bet, brocaded cocktail coats and more T-shirts under delicate feminine clothing like embroidered slips and strapless dresses.

That makes sense Jonathan, thanks. And thanks to TresChic too, who gives us the 18-year-old perspective, which helped me understand.

About that movie - I appreciate your review Jonathan, because I had been reading THIS BLOG

and it made me want to rush out and see it. But I can wait. :sunshine:

Just saw sex and the city...and I have to agree with Jonathan that Carrie dresses beyond a writers budget------though she always did.....no writer, no matter how good wears an outfit of a prada dress, burberry belt, dior sandals and a $1,200 eiffel tower-shaped bag.....and lives in a gorgeous apartment....with a personal assistant!!!!!!!!
I thought samanthas outfits were great!!!though they put heavy make-up on her which was awful....though maybe they were trying to make her look older because she turns 50 in the film....

I have seen many outfits in papparazzi shots that didnt make it to the film....I hope Patricia Field has a special feature on the DVD because though her personal style is horrendous, I love her styling for the show....

Patricia Fields is the Stylist for The movie and shows. My freind got be an extra in the movie got to meet her and failed to get an autograph for me.... When I worked in Soho I used hang at her store. I think she is alot of fun

SATC was shot in NY late last summer and autumn and apparently there were plenty of fashion spies at all the outdoor shoots (and probably a few insiders as well...) I bet that is why this look is being shown because the movie underscores the trend.

I got my new issue of Lucky the other day, and there was a full page devoted to wearing evening dresses during the day. The tank top made an appearance as a way to dress-down an evening dress.
