Accessorizing a 1940s suit

I have a 1940s suit in navy blue faille. There are two jeweled (colorless) buttons on the jacket in front at the waist, and the skirt is A-line. I have a couple of events coming up and I'd love to wear the suit to at least one of them, but I'm wondering how to accessorize it.

One of the events is a special "noir-chitecure" tour sponsored by the Los Angeles Conservancy. I'm one of the docents and will be giving tours of the Glendale train station (featured in a scene from the 1944 film "Double Indemnity"). The other event is cocktails at Union Station (definitely a train theme for me this month!)

I'm new here, and I'm really looking forward to any suggestions you may have for everything from jewelry to shoes to make my outfit a winner.

Thank you!

Joan

Hi Joan,

My personal favorite accessory is a silk scarf. Sometimes I add a suitable brooch to secure the scarf at the collar of what I'm wearing.

Those sound like really fun events!

Hi Joan! I think for the Glendale Station tour (love that building, and have departed from there once) it would be fun to channel Barbara Stanwyck. You know, an anklet and ankle straps on your shoes, you know? Is Judy attending these? :)

On flickr, check out becktress, for stunning forties inspiration. She is like a vintage Jackie O. for the modern world!

A smart 40s felt brimmed hat would look great, if it's not too warm and pair of gauntlet styled gloves depending on the cut of the jacket cuffs. I would agree that either ankle strap as Julie mentioned or peeptoe 40s shoes and of course seamed stockings. A large brooch would look great on the jacket as Sharon stated. A smart clutch purse would be nice if it's not to interfering with what you have to do.

bakelite jewelery is always appropriate

OR you can go the other way and accessorize with very contemporary jewelry - that can be a neat contrast
