Adele Davis of Bond Street

I've got a velvet 1952 coat which I'm told was bought at Adele Davis on Bond Street. So far I've only found one reference online to this store.

Does anyone know more about the store, when it was trading, etc? Any info much appreciated.

Cheers,
Heidi

Hiya Heidi,

Not much meaty info I'm afraid, but I can tell you I've seen ads that span the period 1951 to 1976. They were also down Beauchamp Place in Chelsea - not surprisingly. I found them featured in The Tatler and, as we know, Tatler wouldn't touch you with a bargepole if you weren't of the highest standard.

Here are the only snippets I could find:

Good luck!

ps - how about posting a photo and another of the label?

We may have found the same thing.. but I did a quick search and there was a company named Brent-Davis at 10 New Bond St in Mayfair, which was down as a clothing retailer on the company returns. Adele Davis is down as a director from 1991-1997 (which seems a bit late for your coat - but maybe she was named after another older family member?) . They were incorporated 1947 and ceased trading in 1997.

Thanks both for your help! Unfortunately there's no label on the coat, I only know its origin because the original owner left that info. It sounds like the store was in Chelsea and Bond Street then, which helps.

Here's the coat in question. I should snap a selfie of it. It seems to fit me, and I'm a 16.

That quote is hilarious about the '80's!
For the fun of it, I just ran a search for him, seeing as he worked for Adele Davis. Well, we can all thank our lucky stars his completely acid house school of fashion design didn't catch on or he'd have us all dressed as Dusty Bin.
