Advice on cleaning silk burn out 1930's fabric

I have this 30's burn out dress and cape which is in very good condition apart from some darkening/dirty areas and one rusted area. I don't trust it at a dry cleaners so thought I would spot clean it gently myself. Can anyone advise me otherwise?

I agree that dry-cleaning isn't a good idea. I can't recommend spot cleaning on velvet of this era. If you get it wet at all, odds are very high you will mash the pile down permanently. And leave a really dirty tide line where the moisture ends. Sometimes, we just have to live with things the way they are.
Note, I have hand-washed new cut velvet chiffon, but it didn't look the same afterwards, as the pile became crushed/panne and the fabric was strong enough to hang to dry, which this wouldn't be.
