Advice on how to describe this dress?

Hi! Total forum newbie here. I'm hoping some of you smart folks can help me with this super cute dress. After looking at the label resource, I'm pretty certain it's late 60's. My dilemma is the crocodile, but no mention of Lacoste on the tags. Should I refer to this as a Lacoste design manufactured by David Crystal? Should I not mention Lacoste at all? Thanks in advance! Can you show how the motif is attached? is it embroidered through the dress fabric or just sewn on by hand or even ironed on?

Thanks so much for your reply. Here are the best shots I could get of the croc, front and back. It looks sewn on with clear thread? Again, thanks!

The croc motif is most probably original to the dress. If you look at the VFG Label Resource under David Crystal you will see:

"In 1952, David Crystal Company signed an agreement with Lacoste to import, and, in 1966, to make Lacoste shirts and polo shirt dresses in the United States. David Crystal was also the owner of the Izod and Haymaker labels, and so the crocodile logo is seen on garments with quite a few different labels. These shirts and dresses were very fashionable in the middle 1960s and in the early 1980s, and came to typify the “preppy” look."

I remember the label - and I agree with you that you've found a super-cute dress and if you are the model it looks great on you!

Edit: I cross posted with Maxine!

I deleted my post as I stand corrected :)

I have always known logos such as this to be embroidered through the garment fabric and personally, I didn't think the croc looked well enough made to be a real lacoste motif.

Thanks for your insight. So frustrating that someone would do this sort of thing to a perfectly nice dress. I'm thinking it might be best to try removing it without (hopefully) damaging the dress.

Oops, didn't see the other replies before I posted. I definitely won't get out the seam ripper yet! Thanks, and I'd love to hear more info. Alas, not me in the dress, just a beautiful friend of mine. :)

Welcome to the forums. Your friend is a great model!

You mentioned that you are new to the Forums. We have extensive resources including a Label Resource that both Maxine and I reference in our replies to you. If you click on Home above or the Logo in the center of this page you will be taken to the VFG Home Page and from there you can click on Crystal, David and read about him and about the other designer you asked about, too!

Thanks so much, Linn. The label resource is fascinating, that's what made me question the dress. I spent too much time looking at the pictures of labels, and not enough time reading. Silly. I'll be sure to tell my friend how lucky I am to have her model for me.
