Advice on vintage online store licenses

Hi everyone, I am interested in creating an online store to sell vintage clothing. I have a huge collection and web design experience but need advice in an area. I am getting conflicting info on whether I need any licenses to sell online from California. I have considered etsy too but think I would like to create my own site using yahoo small business. If anyone has any advice it is very appreciated! Thank you.

In most states, you can be a sole proprietor without filing any paperwork and depending upon your business you may not need licensing. Also, generally you don't need to register your business name as long as it is descriptive of your business (there is more to it but that is v generic reg). For instance Jane's Vintage. If it isn't decriptive you need to file a fictitious name filing. The really tricky part is the sales tax issue and even local tax issues. I would really suggest you check the California Sec of State website for specifc info and also check with your local government for licensing issues. Taxes can also be more tricky if you remain a sole proprietor as you usually file under your personal taxes...can get v. muddled.

Adding to what Melody said, in many or probably most states if you re-sell in state you are required to pay sales or excise tax on your sales. Some states (including Hawaii) have excemptions for out of state sales but I am not sure about California. Best to check.
