Advice re: dress, please

It's definitely older than 50 years because Grandma J is 83 and she wore this dancing when she was young. I just want to find the best place to sell it for her,

Hi Helen,

1950 is 63 years ago. Grandma would have been 20 in 1950. If this dress is from sometime in the 1950s and Grandma is 83, that would mean she wore when she was in her 20s - that's when she was young.

It's difficult to advise where you should sell it, as it depends on you. Do you have any experience as a seller? Do you have any experience or history to show in any online venue such as eBay or Etsy? Are there any vintage shops near you that might sell it for a percentage?

Thanks for all input.
I have an ebay account but it's for odds and sods, nothing like this dress. I don't have an etsy account (never really had anything that was this lovely to sell there). There aren't any vintage shops near me that I know of.

This is a pretty dress Helen, but not so remarkable that your neighbour should expect a high price. Have a look on ebay for completed 50s dresses...I might search 1950s cocktail dress and be sure to then do an Advanced Search and click on Completed Items. This will give you a marker of prices, and it may be that your neighbour would rather keep it than sell it for little cash. Selling items of sentimental value for friends is tricky!

Just a thought.

Thank you. My neighbour's mum isn't expecting a high price but if it can be sold she would be pleased. She really doesn't want to keep it. She's having a clear out and giving stuff to charity and selling other bits. I went to the local auction house this morning who said about £20. After their commission that wouldn't be much left for Grandma J.
