Advice regarding Hats?

Over the next few weeks, I'm going to be looking at the hats we don't need in our am-dram costume store. I've noticed that the Hat Resource on here isn't up and running just yet. Can anyone recommend any good reference sites which I could look at when I come to it - to try and date them, or find out more about particular makers/designers? I can of course ask on here (and I probably will!) but it would be good to know if there's anywhere else people look.

Off the top of my head I know there are a number of 'petal' hats and ones that remind me of those nylon skin scrubbers(!) and feather hats too. I guess these are from the 1960s and maybe 1950s but not really a clue! Thanks so much.

Liz,

If you can spring for it, one of our members here, Susan Langley, has written 2 books on hats titled "Vintage Hats and Bonnets". I recommend them. There are 2 editions, the first one is much less expensive. They are both very good books, and the later edition has more details and updated info.

I do not know of any hat sites that I can recommend, but "Hatatorium" has some good basic information for the beginner. You have to pay for most of the info, but some of it is there for free. There is a self published e-book along with the site, but it is only available as an E-"book" you can download to your device (you have to pay for it), but I do not know if it is still a functioning site.

You can certainly feel free to post photos here, or if you really have a lot of photos and do not want to clog up the Forums, you can contact me through my website and I am always happy to help in any way I can. Hats are my overwhelming passion!!

Oh, thank you Barbara for your really helpful (and quick) reply. I'll follow up all your suggestions and may well be contacting you. I've been putting off looking at them, but I can't any longer! I think there are about 5 carrier bags full so the sooner I look at them the better as our sale is only 5 weeks away (gulp... I have so much to look at still!)

Have been brave - and had a look at some of them. Have sent you a couple of emails and will post a few more photos up on the forum. Thanks so much for any advice you can give.
